A New Dawn for Tribal Sovereignty

Empowering the Next Generation's Voice

Empowering Youth Through Constitution

The vital constitutional amendments undertaken by the Lac du Flambeau Tribe strengthens sovereignty and empowers youth voices.

Benefits of Constitutional Amendments for the LDF Tribe

  •  Strengthening tribal sovereignty by reducing external influences on governance.
  •  Empowering youth voices in decision-making processes, ensuring their impact on the tribe's future.
  •  Enhancing community participation and feedback mechanisms to build a more inclusive governance framework.

Empowering the voices of our youth is not just about giving them the platform to speak today. It's about ensuring they spearhead the progress of tomorrow. For the Lac du Flambeau Band of Lake Superior Chippewa Indians, our constitution is the compass that guides our sovereignty. Since its adoption in 2005, it has been the cornerstone of governance within our territories, defined by the historical Treaty dated September 30, 1854.

Historical Context

Our journey began under a constitution that has served us well. This constitution encompasses all lands and waters within the Lac du Flambeau Reservation, outlining the governance framework that has been our guide for nearly two decades. However, to ensure our youth are empowered and our sovereignty is strengthened, it's time for a shift.

Constitutional Changes

A significant amendment we're focusing on is Article VIII, aiming to eliminate federal government influence on our elections. This change is not just about today; it sets the stage for a future where our tribe decides its course without external pressures. It's a step toward a more autonomous governance, empowering us to make decisions that are truly ours.

Impact on Sovereignty

The amendments proposed, especially concerning elections, will significantly bolster our tribal sovereignty. By reducing external influences, we ensure our decisions reflect our community's desires, particularly the younger generation. These changes pave the way for a future governed by the values and visions of the Lac du Flambeau youth, ensuring their voices are not just heard but are influential in shaping our path forward.

Community Voice

We're not just making changes; we're opening avenues for our youth to be a part of the governance process. By adjusting our constitution to enhance member voices, we're creating mechanisms for feedback and active participation. This means our youth don't just get a seat at the table; they get to help build the table, ensuring their representation in decisions that affect them now and in the future.

Community leaders, activists, and tribal members have shared their perspectives, echoing the importance of these amendments. "This change is more than a shift in our constitution; it's a promise to our youth that their voices matter, that they have the power to shape our tribe's future," shares a community leader. This sentiment underlines the potential of these constitutional developments to profoundly impact how we govern and involve our younger members.

In summary, the constitutional amendments proposed are a critical step toward empowering the voices of our youth and strengthening our tribal sovereignty. By removing external influences on our governance, we're paving the way for a future that respects and reflects the will of the Lac du Flambeau Band of Lake Superior Chippewa Indians.

We invite all tribal members, especially our youth, to engage with the Constitution Committee on these exciting developments. Your feedback, participation, and support are vital in shaping a future where every voice is heard, respected, and has the power to influence the course of our tribe. Together, let's embark on this journey of empowerment and sovereignty.
